D-SOL Biodiesel Purification System

Portable D-SOL filtration system on a skid
Vertical pressure leaf filter used for D-SOL purification

Dry-wash purification for biodiesel. D-SOL adsorbent with DPTI filtration and mixing replaces water washing and ion-exchange resin, with no effluent and minimal yield loss.

Specifications

D-SOL synthetic magnesium silicate (no crystalline silica)
Depth filtration
Down to 1 µm or less
Removes
Soap, catalyst, glycerin, metals, methanol, sterol glucosides
System
D-SOL adsorbent · mixing tank · DPTI filtration system

Typical applications

  • Post-transesterification biodiesel purification
  • Reprocessing off-spec biodiesel
  • Feedstock pretreatment

D-SOL is the original dry-wash agent in the biodiesel market, made by The Dallas Group of America. It is mixed into the methyl ester after transesterification, where it adsorbs soap, excess catalyst, glycerin, metals, residual methanol and other polar compounds. The loaded adsorbent is then removed in a single filtration step.

Why not water wash or ion-exchange resin?

Water washing needs pretreatment and loses yield to the effluent. Drying the methyl ester costs time and money, high soap causes emulsions, gravity separation is slow (or needs costly centrifuges), the wastewater has to be treated, and sterol glucosides are not removed.

Ion-exchange resin gives no depth filtration (around 175 µm), cannot be regenerated for soap or catalyst, is sensitive to process upsets, may need an extra column when glycerin runs high, and the spent resin has to be disposed of.

What D-SOL gives you

  • No water effluent stream and no emulsification
  • Improved oxidative stability
  • Minimal yield loss and a faster purification step
  • Removal of sterol glucosides
  • Reprocessing of off-spec material
  • Biodiesel that meets regulatory specifications

How we work with you

We start with tests in your laboratory, then run a performance trial at your site with our portable filtration system, and support you through commissioning. To prepare a price per litre of purified biodiesel and an indicative cost for the filtration system, we need your annual plant capacity in million litres.
