Diatomaceous earth is a fine, porous powder that forms a very effective filter layer. In a D.E. filter, a thin precoat of filter aid is first built up on the screens; more filter aid is then dosed continuously into the liquid (body feed) so the cake stays permeable as solids are captured.
The result is a bright, clear filtrate, which is why D.E. filtration is widely used in sugar refining and brewing. Horizontal-screen designs hold the cake securely if flow is interrupted; centrifugal-discharge designs spin the screens to remove the spent cake without opening the vessel.
