Structured packing gives a column a large, ordered surface for vapour and liquid to contact, with a lower pressure drop than trays or random packing. Higher-numbered grades (such as 500Y and 700Y) have more surface area per cubic metre for sharper separation; lower grades favour capacity.
Demister pads remove entrained droplets from gas streams at the top of columns, evaporators and separators.
